Private car insurance in Kenya is mandatory by law — every vehicle on the road must carry at least Third Party Only cover under the Insurance (Motor Vehicles Third Party Risks) Act. But the right policy goes well beyond legal compliance: it protects the value tied up in your vehicle, the income you would lose without it, and your liability if you injure another road user.

Vike works with all major IRA-regulated motor underwriters in Kenya. We compare premiums, excess structures, claims track records, and add-on availability so you can pick the cover that matches both your vehicle's value and how you actually use it — whether that is a daily commute on Mombasa Road, weekend trips upcountry, or school runs in Karen.

What It Covers

  • Accidental damage to your own vehicle (Comprehensive)

  • Theft and attempted theft of the vehicle and fitted accessories

  • Fire, lightning, and explosion damage

  • Third-party bodily injury and death (legally required)

  • Third-party property damage up to the policy limit

  • Windscreen and window glass damage

  • Towing to the nearest approved repairer following a covered loss

  • Authorised driver cover (named or any-driver, depending on the policy)

Who It's For

  • Owners of sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, and station wagons used for personal and family transport

  • Drivers financing a vehicle through a bank or sacco — most lenders require Comprehensive cover

  • Owner-driven vehicles only (no PSV, fare-paying, or hire & reward use)

  • Vehicles registered in Kenya with a valid logbook in the policyholder's name

Types We Cover

Each profile is rated and underwritten differently. Talk to us so we can match your specific situation.

Comprehensive

Full cover for own-vehicle damage, theft, fire, and third-party liability. The standard recommendation for newer or financed vehicles where repair and replacement costs are significant.

Third Party Fire & Theft (TPFT)

Mid-range cover that protects against theft, fire, and damage you cause to others — but excludes accidental damage to your own car. Often the right choice for older or mid-value vehicles where Comprehensive premiums no longer make economic sense.

Third Party Only (TPO)

The legal minimum. Covers only damage you cause to other people and their property. Suited to very old or low-value vehicles where you have accepted the risk of total loss yourself.

Agreed Value Policy

For classic, modified, or high-value vehicles, you and the insurer agree the sum insured upfront. Removes disputes over depreciation at claim time. Usually requires a recent valuation report.

Real-World Scenarios

Rear-ended in Nairobi traffic

Your bumper and tailgate need replacing. Under Comprehensive, the insurer pays the repair less your excess. If the other driver is fully at fault and identifiable, the insurer can recover from their insurer and refund your excess.

Vehicle stolen from your compound

After a police abstract is obtained and the standard waiting period elapses, a Comprehensive or TPFT policy pays out the market value at the time of loss (or the agreed value if applicable), less any excess.

Hit a pedestrian

Third-party bodily injury is legally unlimited in Kenya. Any motor policy — including TPO — handles the liability and any associated legal costs, subject to policy terms.

Optional Benefits & Add-ons

Excess Protector — waives the excess on accidental damage claims

Political Violence & Terrorism (PVT) — riots, strikes, and terrorism damage

Loss of Use — daily allowance while your vehicle is being repaired

Courtesy Car — replacement vehicle during repairs

24/7 Roadside Assistance & Towing

Personal Accident cover for the driver and passengers

Availability varies by underwriter. Our advisors will confirm what is available on your chosen policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a rule of thumb, when annual Comprehensive premium exceeds about 8–10% of the vehicle's market value, TPFT becomes more economical. We will run the numbers for your specific vehicle before you decide.
